There was a time when we imagined strange animals and plants thriving beyond the borders of the known world. Distorted versions of the nature we already knew, these creatures were reflections of our wonder at what the wilderness might contain, fear of its power, and an understanding that life thrives beyond human control. As we've moved from awe and imagination to knowledge and conquest, not only is the natural world withering, but so is the imagined world. If the amazement at the unknown we once experienced is no longer possible due to the exploration and exploitation of nature, then what happens to all the monsters and dragons that live in our dreams? Do they also go extinct, or do they thrive even when we can't?
